Understanding the DMX/Artnet Protocol for Professional Lighting Installations
The integration with the DMX/Artnet protocol is exclusive to the Twinkly PRO Power Line Controller, Twinkly PRO 1500 Ethernet controller, Twinkly Plus and Lightwall powered by Twinkly.
Overview of DMX/Artnet Protocol
The DMX/Artnet protocol is widely used in the lighting and entertainment industries to control stage lighting and effects. It merges the DMX (Digital Multiplex) standard with network-based communication capabilities offered by Artnet.
To utilise this feature, users need to enable it explicitly through the dedicated section in the Twinkly mobile App for iOS. This functionality is available for Twinkly PRO 1500 Ethernet Controller and Twinkly PRO Power Line Controller products with firmware starting from version v2.6.0.
Enabling the Feature on the Twinkly App
The integration of DMX/Artnet protocol is not activated by default on Twinkly PRO and Plus devices. To enable this feature, users must access the Twinkly app, navigate to the Device Menu, select their Twinkly device, and access the Device Details screen by tapping on the device gear icon. Within the "Advanced Configuration" section, users can enable Artnet and DMX functionality after disabling DHCP and setting a fixed IP address. This allows users to configure Net-Subnet and Universe values.
It is crucial to carefully configure network settings as incorrect values may render the device unreachable. In such instances, a device reset to factory settings is required to regain access. Users are advised to exercise caution and verify all network configurations before saving.
Physical Setup of Artnet/DMX
In a typical setup, a Twinkly controller is connected via a LAN cable to a router, which is then linked to a DMX to Artnet Node for signal conversion. Additionally, a console is connected using an XLR/DMX cable to control the lighting system. Refer to the diagram below for a visual representation of the setup.
If you incorrectly configure the network values and then save the settings, your device will become unreachable. In such a case, you will need to Reset the device to its factory settings to regain access. Please exercise extreme caution and double-check all network configurations before saving.
Controlling Twinkly Features with Artnet/DMX
Enabling the Artnet/DMX protocol provides extensive control over the lighting system. Through this protocol, users can adjust colours, manage effects, control playlists, modify brightness levels, and toggle the lights on and off. These functions can be operated using faders on the console, offering lighting technicians an intuitive interface to efficiently manage the lighting setup.
With the introduction of Twinkly Plus and Lightwall, users have two possible DMX configurations:
Basic 8bit and Plus 8bit.
DMX Configurations:
1) Basic 8bit Configuration (Pro Controllers only):
- This configuration is specific to Twinkly Pro controllers. It allows for control over brightness, mode, and other key functionalities.
- The Basic 8bit DMX channels include:
