Twinkly Direct Wi-Fi Connection procedure
This article refers to Twinkly Generation I & II devices
What's the Twinkly network and how do I connect to it?
Each Twinkly device develops its own Wi-Fi signal allowing you to control it from your smartphone.
Direct connection is available both for Generation I and Generation II devices.
- Check that Wi-Fi networks are activated on your smartphone.
- Go to your smartphone's Wi-Fi settings
- Check the list of available local Wi-Fi networks.
- Scroll down through the list and select the network emitted by your Twinkly device, showing as “Twinkly_XXXXXX”.
- That’s your Twinkly! Select this network and wait until the connection is established.
-
Only for Generation II type the Twinkly Wi-fi password*: Twinkly2019
Now the Twinkly app can find your device.
Access the effects gallery to try them all, edit the preset ones or create new ones from scratch.
At this point, you have a direct connection between your smartphone and your Twinkly device.
On the controller, you can see a steady, green light.
No internet connection is available in this status.
To check if your device is directly connected, check the voice Network in your device's details as below.
Change Your Password
Due to recent California regulations, the default password must be changed after the first use to prevent unauthorized access to your lights.
Important steps:
-
The default direct connection password is Twinkly2019.
-
After changing this password, you will be disconnected automatically.
-
You must then:
-
Go to your mobile device’s Wi-Fi settings.
-
Select the Twinkly_xxxxxx network again.
-
Enter the new password you just set.
-
Once connected, reopen the Twinkly app to continue.
-
Note:
If you reset your device, the next time you connect to the Twinkly_xxxx network, you will need to use the original password Twinkly2019 again — and then change it once more.
Generation I: Connect your Twinkly in Direct mode
Generation I: Connect your Twinkly in Direct mode
What can I do with my Twinkly when in direct mode?
Please note that the Twinkly network does not provide internet access. As a result, certain features will not be available when connected in this mode:
- Mapping in advanced modes such as 3D Shape, Cone, and Vertical Surface (PRO users only), as well as Floor-to-Wall (PRO users only)
- Downloading new effects from the online gallery: Please note that downloading new effects does not require being connected to the Twinkly device (which, in this case, can even be temporarily offline). Once the desired effects have been downloaded, you will be able to apply them by reconnecting the device to its Twinkly network.
- Sharing custom effects with other users: However, if you wish to share an effect with other users, you can temporarily disconnect the device from its Twinkly network and connect your phone to the cellular network.
You will still be able to share the effect even if the device is offline, as it is not essential for the device to be locally reachable to complete this process. - Creating groups with multiple devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network: In any case, as explained in the previous paragraph, you can connect up to 4 devices to a Twinkly network by creating a group (this total limit also includes the device that provides the network and acts as the Wi-Fi access point).
- Control Twinkly remotely using smart home apps like Google Home, Amazon Echo, and Apple Homekit.
For full access to these features, we recommend connecting your Twinkly devices to a Wi-Fi network with internet access.
To access the internet while using Twinkly, you need to manually link them to a local Wi-Fi network.
Managing multiple devices in Direct Connection.
To manage multiple devices in this connection mode, follow these steps:
- Reset the devices.
- Connect one of the devices to the Twinkly_XXXXXX network.
- Connect the next one by choosing the "USE HOME/OFFICE WiFi". Make sure to choose the Twinkly_XXXXXX network of the first device.
Please note:
- In this connection mode, you can control up to 4 Twinkly devices simultaneously.
- When using Direct mode, you have two mapping strategies available: Simple - Quick Scan and 3-Dimensional - Fast Cone.
To manage more than one Twinkly from the same smartphone and to access the internet while using Twinkly, you need to manually link them to a local Wi-Fi network.
Moreover, when Twinkly is connected to Wi-Fi, you can create Twinkly groups and control Twinkly remotely using smart home apps like Google Home, Amazon Echo, and Apple Homekit.
Direct Connection and Downloading Effects
Please remember: to download new effects, your device must be connected to a local Wi-Fi network. The Twinkly Direct connection does not provide internet access.
