Everything you need to know about Compatibility Mode in Twinkly devices
This article refers to Twinkly Generation II, Lightwall and Twinkly Plus
Compatibility Mode is available starting from these firmware versions:
v. 2.9.0 → All Retail devices from Generation II onwards, including older Pro Plus WiFi models.
v. 3.4.3 → Twinkly Plus 2023 and 2024 products, and Lightwall.
What does this mean for me?
For most home users, nothing changes, you can keep using Twinkly as usual, as Compatibility Mode is enabled by default.
Disabling Compatibility Mode only matters if your devices are installed in shared spaces (like hotels, schools, offices, or events) or on networks that aren’t your own home Wi-Fi.
What is Compatibility Mode?
In a typical home setup, your Wi-Fi network already protects your Twinkly lights: only people you allow onto your Wi-Fi can access them. This makes installation simple and also allows Twinkly to work smoothly with third-party systems on your local network, including DIY integrations.
Things are different if you use Twinkly on a network that isn’t private or isn’t directly managed by you, for example, in hotels, schools, event venues, or other shared spaces. In these cases, you may want to turn Compatibility Mode off for extra security.
When Compatibility Mode is disabled:
Only the users who set up the device in their Twinkly app will be able to control it.
All communication between the device and the app is encrypted, so no one else on the network can intercept or tamper with the connection.
How it works
By default, it’s ON → Twinkly can connect with third-party apps and systems on your LAN.
If you turn it OFF → third-party apps lose access, which is safer for shared or public networks.
🔒 Important: communication between Twinkly devices and the internet is always encrypted, so no one can control your lights from outside your network.
When to use it
ON (enabled): great if you want Twinkly to work with external apps or integrations.
OFF (disabled): recommended when using Twinkly on shared or public networks.
How to manage Compatibility Mode
Open the Twinkly app.
Select your device.
Go to Object Information.
Scroll to find Compatibility Mode.
Toggle ON/OFF as needed.
