What are the main differences between Generation I and II?
The main difference between Generation I and II devices consists of the technology inside the controller that enables the following features on Generation II devices:

How to easily distinguish a Generation I product from a Generation II product?
The visual feature that instantly identifies Generation I from Generation II is the different shapes of the controllers.

It's also important to keep in mind that Generation II Twinkly Strings and Dots are split into two different bundles of LEDs, with the controller in the middle, unlike Generation I Strings which are arranged in a single strand.
The 100 LED String and the 60 LED Dots don't follow the double row rule.
Can I group Generation I devices with Generation II ones?
Generation I and II differ in some features and advancements in performance and technology, but if you already own a Generation I device you can definitely also get Generation II and group them together always keeping into account the grouping rules.
